Context and Brief

Fulwell 73 productions approached us to take on this incredible project following the success of Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl in 2022. We were asked to help bring to life and celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the animated “The Lion King” with an immersive live-to-film concert event.

The show featured the original 1994 film across the bowl screens, live orchestra, fireworks, show-stopping vocal performances of award-winning songs from the film, special celebrity guests, including cast members from both the classic 1994 animated and 2019 films and select performances from the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical!

Creative Vision + Art Direction

During our design and development process, we aimed to visually represent the enchanting kingdoms of the Lion King franchise and bring to life the captivating stories and incredible music from the films and Broadway show.

From an art direction standpoint, We faced the challenge of combining the varied aesthetics of the 1994 animated film, the 2019 live-action remake, and the Broadway production into a cohesive look, adapting it to the unique canvas of the Hollywood Bowl. For some of the tracks, we closely adhered to the beloved visuals from the films, however for others, we allowed ourselves more artistic licence, always drawing inspiration from Disney's immense artistry.

The Lion King at the Hollywood Bowl embodied the spirit of the beloved films and stage show, creating a unique design aesthetic and seamlessly integrating the latest technology for an immersive Live-to-Film concert, also making its way to Disney+.

Technical

As with Encanto at the Hollywood Bowl we knew we needed to tailor the creative to be visible from as many angles as possible. We used Unreal Engine to create a Pre-Vis which allowed us to check this before arriving on site.

We made use of various software to compliment both the 1994 animated film and the 2019 live action version. Rendering with Redshift through Maxon Cinema 4D allowed us to create photo realistic looks along with a more stylised visual to match both film aesthetics. For compositing we utilised the Adobe Suite, in particular After Effects, along with a range of plugins to enhance our work.
