Context and Brief
Our team were tasked with creating a revolutionary performance where Liam Payne and his avatar performed together on stage within a cosmic particle world.
We brought together the elements of Liam Payne and his digital avatar, BAFTA nominated film footage and a Hologauze set on the stage of the virtual BAFTA awards.
Liam Payne made a historic appearance at the 2021 EE BAFTA Film Awards as the opening act. He performed an unmissable and unique gig powered by EE's 5G network, featuring a world-first, real-time augmented reality avatar.
Ahead of the main broadcast, Liam Payne wore a motion-capture suit with over 50 sensors to map his body and facial movements. This allowed fans across the UK to stream his 3D avatar live into their homes, parks, and gardens using The Round augmented reality app
The performance was broadcast to over 2 million viewers and was streamed in augmented reality on EE's 'The Round' app.
Following the mobile pre-show, Payne’s avatar was beamed directly onto the stage at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The digital hologram joined the real-life Liam on stage to deliver an explosive, real-time duet to kick off the BBC One broadcast

Approach
We built the idea of the particle world with Black Skull Creative, as a way of joining these elements together.
This gave the impression of Liam and his avatar interacting with the cosmos, and travelling to the ocean and back. The particles were also a great way to transition in and out of the film clips featured in the performance.
We created the particle system using Notch so we had maximum control over the movement which was synced directly with the choreography.
